MMA Protection

For MMA sparring, the essential protection is a gum shield, groin guard and shin guards. MMA gloves are required for striking sparring. A head guard is strongly recommended for full contact striking sparring. Joint support for knees and ankles is advisable for regular grappling. Check with your gym for their specific sparring equipment requirements before purchasing.

For MMA training, shin guards that cover both the shin and the instep are recommended, as they protect against both kicks and leg checks. Instep coverage is particularly important for MMA as low kicks and leg checks are common. Fairtex and MTG produce quality shin guards specifically designed for MMA and Muay Thai use. Look for shin guards with a secure fit that do not slip during ground work.

For MMA, a slim-fit gum shield that allows easy breathing during intense sparring and grappling is ideal. Most MMA gyms require head guards for all full contact sparring. For light technical sparring, some gyms allow training without head guards — always follow your gym's specific safety guidelines.
