BJJ Equipment FAQs

What equipment do I need to start BJJ?

To start BJJ, the essential equipment is a gi (if training in a gi class) or rash guard and shorts (for no gi). A gum shield is strongly recommended for sparring and rolling. As you progress, ear guards are useful for preventing cauliflower ear during regular grappling. A kit bag to carry your gear and a water bottle complete the basics. Check with your club for their specific equipment requirements before purchasing.

What is the difference between gi and no gi BJJ?

Gi BJJ is practised wearing a traditional uniform (gi), which can be gripped during techniques. The gi adds an additional layer of strategy as grips on the collar, sleeves and lapels are central to many techniques. No gi BJJ is practised in rash guards and shorts without a gi, removing cloth grips and placing greater emphasis on body control, underhooks and clinch work. Many practitioners train both formats.

What colour gi do I need for BJJ?

For most BJJ clubs, white, blue and black gis are the standard accepted colours. Some clubs also allow grey and navy. Coloured gis with excessive patches or non-standard designs may not be permitted at all clubs or competitions. For competition, check the rules of your governing body (e.g. IBJJF) as they have specific gi colour and specification requirements. When in doubt, a white gi is universally accepted.

Which BJJ brands do you stock?

We stock BJJ equipment and clothing from Adidas, Cimac, Fairtex, MTG and Opro. Adidas produces competition-grade gi and no gi gear trusted by elite grapplers. Cimac offers great value gi and equipment for beginners and club use. Fairtex and MTG bring strong combat sports heritage to their BJJ and no gi ranges. Opro is our go-to brand for gum shields and mouth protection.
